Siena

Siena is the capital of the province of the same name in Tuscany. It is a city renowned worldwide for its extraordinary cultural and artistic riches and beautiful landscape and for the substantial stylistic unity of its medieval urban fabric, as well as for its celebrated horse race called the Palio. The city’s structure is characterized by considerable differences in level and narrow and winding streets. The historic center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995. The name terra di Siena—raw or burnt sienna in English—is given to a reddish-brown pigment used for centuries in painting.
